Job description – Technician or assistant (T)
11 November 2008 (addition of premises support)
Technicians, assistants and trainees work under supervision. Some undertake work in a specific area of the business (laboratory, administration, personnel & premises, or field work) while others are generalists who undertake some duties across all these fields.
Administrative support
- Answering the phone
- Filing
- Monthly accounts, GST and BAS
- Purchasing stationery supplies
- Invoicing customers for work completed
- Build good relationships with clients
- Organising travel and accomodation for fieldwork
- Attending meetings with senior consultant to review work progress
Fieldwork support
- Preparing equipment for fieldwork
- Assisting with fieldwork using established methods
- Packing and cleaning up after fieldwork
- Preparation of specimens, and preparation and transport of soil/water samples
- Flora and fauna identification
- Locate geographic features using a GPS
Project desk work support
- Land title and usage history searches
- Aerial photography history searches
- Aerial photograph visual analysis
- Data entry of field data (geographic and biological data)
- Compile species lists and compare to regional, State and national lists of significant species
- Assist with GIS analysis of survey sites
- Assist with mathematical modelling where required
- Assist with ecological community analysis
Laboratory support
- Chemical and physical soil and water testing
- Microbiological testing
- Plankton counts and identification
- Quality assurance laboratory testing for external clients
- Maintaining test equipment (including calibration and standards)
Personnel & premises support
- Undertake care duties as required
- Organise contractors for maintenance of premises
- Undertake day to day cleaning and routine maintenance of premises
Purchasing support
- Order supplies as required, from approved suppliers
- Purchase consumable requirements on a regular basis
- Control of supplies
- Protection and preservation of supplies
- Receiving inspection
Management system responibilities in relation to the area of work
- Undertake duties using operating procedures in the Management System
- Provide suggestions for improving instructions and procedures
